Take an aluminum foil hat, pass the rest around

2002-09-21 1:20 pm

apparently its been 21 days since i've last updated. i mean to update fairly often, but unfortunately my time has been occupied by school and work to such an extent that these 21 days have blurred by. these past few weeks have been characterized by: a difficult paper, laboratory preparation, and an old man's hand slipping out of mine as i tried to save him as he dangled many feet off the ground (he survived unscathed by great luck).

but i come to you today as i have been mulling over conspiracy theory lately. it all started as i did some reading on the Bilderbergers and various levels of conspiracy associated with them. i ask myself (and you, if someone is inclined to give an opinion) why the hell is there such a thing as conspiracy theory, and what can we learn from it, about our culture and ourselves? My guess is that conspiracy theory serves the same function as traditional mythology. in other words, it is a set of stories which explain phenomena about aspects of the world around us which are too complex to be readily intuitive. in the case of conspiracy theory, we are given a narrative on the anxiety of existing in a society whose political system has become detached and distanced from the costituency. Power lies in tertiary legislative bodies with little or no direct contact betweeb governing-goverened. people see the world changing in a manner described by many with the very trendy "globalization". The process of culture change on a global scale, encompassing within it political/socioeconomic change, is a vastly complex system that cannot be discerned easily by academics let alone the layperson. This gap in knowledge and experience is filled by c.t.

C.T. however is well founded in reality and my statement is not meant to demean.

There are levels or distrust and its corresponding mythopoiesis, which in turn correspond to differing pecentages of the population. take for example the Bilderbergers. theory surrounding this group is organized in 3 degrees, progressing in an inclusive sequence of deeper distrust.

#1- The Bilderbergers are a group of world political and business leaders who convene in secret locations in order to escape press scrutiny and leaks. they hold inoformal discussions.

#2- The Bilderbergers are a secret organization of world political and business leaders who influence world politics for their ultimate agenda of creatign the New World Order, with NATO as their supranational army.

#3- The Bilderbergers are controlled by the Illuminati working toward the abolition of nation states.

Hence we have the processes of culture change described in terms of mythopoiesis- the creation of a "pantheon" of unseen god-like figures who manipulate world events from a distant Ivory-Tower.

comments are welcome of course, but keep this caveat in mind: as an academic i may be an unwitting pawn of this conspiracy. don't believe a word i say. and it doesn't help that i'm cretan...

from dust - from ashes
