First of all, a brief shoutout to Quietoath, a new member of the fold, and the younger sibling of a certain rock troll.Something's been bugging my lately: memes. well, not memes in and of themselves, but rather the concept, taken by certain people who in turn implement it for various, well... purposes of ill repute. in other words- i have a problem with memes as technology.
(what in gods name is a meme, you ask? in a nutshell- its a discrete unit of evolving cultural meaning).
the conspiracy theorists among you (you know who you are) are probably familiar with this concept if they frequent the disinformation cafe.
what's the worst possible application of the meme? if you ignore consumerist conditioning and simply focus on the other extreme, the answer is memetic viruses. cultural warfare of the very dirty kind intended for (insert organization's ideology here).
i'm not bothered by this because of any inherent dangers, or ethical objections. my issue with the whole thing is that, quite simply, noone can prove that the damn things exist. noone can prove that they are anything other than a construct describing a loose system of interacting phenomena. so what exactly is a technology based on something that you cannot prove to exist? kinda like a car that runs on GOD, theurgy-powered blenders and the like.
however, i may be just as misled as i think these people are, if not more so. in which case disregard the above, and have a pleasant day.
