i'm tired, people.not physically tired really, as i mostly sit on my ass all day (with some exceptions), but mentally. i'm ready to move on, as the MA is 2/3 complete. and when that is mercifully over with, so too will be this job of mine, assuming i have a Doctoral program in my future.
therefore, to avoid a complete meltdown when i need it least, i am coming down to FL at the end of next month, my time to be split between the people of my tribe in the sarasota area, and north miami beach.
i'm currently recovering from a grueling 13-hour workday spent mostly on the campus of Columbia. In light of his ending tenure and the Greek presidency of the EU, the Consul General organized Euro-book fair, inviting delegates from the memberstates including the newly accepted 10. however this event was also to act as a forum for discussing the changing EU- US relations, as well as an academic forum with a couple of presentation from professors of History and literature. A huge event, and there were only 4 of us to run and organize it (including the consul general). This was on thursday, and my body still hurts.
this, then, brings us to something i find quite troubling, the politicization of academics, and its hard to ignore, escpecially after you've sat through an 80-minute lecture of the birth of the modern Olympics. my esotericist ivory tower ideals are constantly assaulted by that sort of thing. i suppose its necessary, if one want one's work to influence policy. but it usually works the other way around, as with the infuriating example of the Bush admin, HIV/AIDS research, and the black listing of those scientists who use certain words that offend the christian-right sensibilities. i want these people to suffer...
so, if i was to do, say, a socioecological study of hierarchy in bonobo societies, i would out of necessity and sense of duty entitle it: HOT GAY JUNGLE SEX (featuring bonus girl-girl action!) - Maintaining Social Status by Fucking your Enemy up the Ass (can you imagine what the field notes would look like?).
